SECR Apprentice Recruitment 2026 — 1644 Railway Vacancies, No Exam, Apply by June 4 | Complete Guide

Dear ITI Graduate,

I want to tell you about something important before this window closes.

The South East Central Railway has announced 1644 Apprentice vacancies for Raipur Division and Wagon Repair Shop in Chhattisgarh. Applications are open right now — from May 5 to June 4, 2026. The application is completely free. There is no written examination, no interview, no skill test. Selection happens purely on the basis of your Class 10 and ITI marks.

I know what you are thinking. You have probably seen dozens of similar recruitment articles. You have bookmarked things before and not followed through. So let me tell you upfront why this specific recruitment deserves more than a bookmark — and why the June 4 deadline is not something to sleep on.

Why I Am Writing This Specifically For You

Most government job articles are written for graduation holders. UPSC preparation guides. State PSC eligibility checklists. Banking exam syllabi.

This letter is for someone different. For the candidate who completed a two-year Electrician ITI from a polytechnic in Chhattisgarh or a neighboring state. For the Fitter trade holder who has been looking for a government-linked opportunity since completing the course. For the Welder who knows the practical work but has not yet gotten the formal industrial experience certificate that every good job seems to require.

Indian Railways — through South East Central Railway — is offering exactly that opportunity right now.

1644 apprentice seats. 13 different trades. Training at one of the most significant railway infrastructure locations in central India. A nationally recognized certificate under the Apprentices Act, 1961. And the single most important fact: your merit rank depends entirely on marks you have already earned. There is no new exam to crack, no last-minute cramming, no hope-and-pray competitive test. What you scored in Class 10 and ITI is what determines your position in the merit list.

If your marks are decent — and I will tell you exactly what “decent” means in a moment — this is genuinely one of the most accessible pathways into formal government-sector technical training available to ITI holders in 2026.

Now Here Is What Most Articles Will Not Tell You

The merit system cuts both ways.

The absence of a written exam sounds entirely positive at first. No exam to prepare for. No coaching required. No last-minute anxiety about question paper difficulty.

But here is the honest reality: the merit system based on existing marks means you cannot improve your position through preparation effort. Every other competitive exam gives you a chance to outperform your academic history. SECR Apprentice selection does not. Your Class 10 percentage is fixed. Your ITI marks are what they are.

This means if your Class 10 marks were 60 to 65 percent in General category, you will be competing against candidates with 75 to 85 percent marks who applied for the same trade. The cut-off for popular trades like Electrician and Fitter in SECR and similar railway apprenticeship recruitments has historically run between 70 and 80 percent for General category candidates.

What this practically means: if your marks are above 70 percent, apply with genuine confidence. If your marks are between 65 and 70, apply — you are in a competitive but not impossible range. If your marks are below 60, apply anyway because the application is free, but understand that your odds in popular trades are genuinely challenging.

The strategy for lower-mark candidates is trade selection — more on that in a moment.

The training is real, not symbolic.

Some apprenticeship programs are thinly disguised internships where trainees do administrative work, observe without participating, and come away with a certificate but no actual skills.

SECR Apprentice training is not that. Railway workshops are working production environments. The Wagon Repair Shop in Raipur handles real freight wagon maintenance and repair — the same wagons that carry coal, iron ore, and goods across India’s railway network. The Raipur Division workshops maintain locomotives and rolling stock that run daily services.

Apprentices work alongside permanent railway employees. They learn on actual equipment. The technical exposure is industrial-grade, not laboratory-grade. An Electrician trade apprentice at SECR will have touched the actual wiring systems of railway coaches and locomotives — not demonstration panels. A Welder apprentice will have performed actual structural welding on railway components under supervision.

That practical experience changes your resume in a way that classroom training cannot. When you go for jobs after completing this apprenticeship — whether at another PSU, a manufacturing company, or future railway recruitment — the interviewer sees “Apprentice, South East Central Railway” and understands what it means.

The Part That Actually Matters — Your Trade Eligibility

1644 seats are distributed across 13 trades. Let me walk you through the trades and what you need to know about each.

High Vacancy Trades — Where Most Seats Are

Fitter, Electrician, and Welder together likely account for the majority of the 1644 seats based on SECR’s operational requirements. These are the backbone trades of railway maintenance work. Fitters handle mechanical assembly, alignment, and maintenance of rolling stock components. Electricians handle wiring, electrical systems, and power equipment on coaches and locomotives. Welders handle structural repairs and fabrication work on wagon bodies and infrastructure.

If your ITI is in any of these three trades, you have access to the largest pool of available seats — but also the highest competition because these are the most popular ITI trades in India.

Specialized Trades — Fewer Seats, Different Competition

Turner, Machinist, Carpenter, Diesel Mechanic, Wireman, Plumber, and Painter are also included. These trades typically have fewer seats than Fitter or Electrician, but they also attract fewer applicants. A Machinist or Turner ITI holder with 68 percent marks might outcompete an Electrician ITI holder with the same marks simply because the applicant pool for the specialized trade is smaller.

COPA and Stenographer — The Non-Workshop Trades

Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA) and Stenographer are included in this recruitment. These are non-workshop trades placed in railway administrative and technical offices rather than repair workshops. If your ITI is in COPA or Stenography, you can apply for these seats. The work environment is office-based, the skills required are different from the workshop trades, and the competition dynamic may be different from the technical trades.

Health Sanitary Inspector

This trade is distinctly different — related to health and sanitation services rather than engineering. If your ITI is in Health Sanitary Inspector trade, this is a specific opportunity within the railway health infrastructure.

The critical rule: Apply only for the trade that matches your ITI certificate. Applying for a mismatched trade results in rejection at document verification after the merit list is published — a particularly frustrating outcome when you could have simply applied correctly.

What I Would Do If I Were Applying — The Strategy

Here is the practical approach I would take given what I know about how railway apprenticeship merit lists work.

First, calculate your combined percentage accurately. The merit list is typically prepared based on Class 10 marks, ITI marks, or a combination weighted in some formula specified in the official notification. Download the official notification PDF from apprenticeshipindia.gov.in and find the exact merit calculation formula. Some railway apprenticeship recruitments weight 10th marks and ITI marks equally. Others give higher weight to ITI marks. Knowing the formula lets you calculate your expected merit position before applying.

Second, check whether your ITI institute is NCVT or SCVT recognized. This is a mandatory eligibility condition. NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training) and SCVT (State Council for Vocational Training) recognized certificates are accepted. ITI certificates from unrecognized private institutes that do not have NCVT or SCVT affiliation are not eligible. If you are uncertain about your institute’s recognition status, check your ITI certificate — it should mention NCVT or SCVT.

Third, complete your NAPS registration before applying. The Apprenticeship India portal requires candidates to have a registered profile before applying against any advertisement. Your profile must be 100 percent complete — personal details, educational details, ITI trade, bank account information for stipend transfer. An incomplete profile results in automatic application rejection. Log into apprenticeshipindia.gov.in today and check your profile completion status. If you do not have a profile, create one immediately — the June 4 deadline does not wait for profile completion delays.

Fourth, apply at least 10 days before June 4. Government portals running apprenticeship applications regularly experience server slowdowns in the final days. The application itself takes 30 to 45 minutes if your profile is complete and documents are ready. Do this on May 20 or May 25 — not June 3.

A Warning Before You Proceed

Every year, candidates send applications for SECR and similar railway apprenticeship recruitments and then hear nothing — not because they were not selected, but because their application was technically incomplete in ways they were never notified about.

The most common silent rejection reasons in railway apprenticeship applications:

Incomplete NAPS profile — your profile showed 87 percent complete, not 100 percent. The application was submitted but not processed.

ITI certificate not NCVT/SCVT recognized — flagged during the system verification against NCVT records.

Name mismatch between application and 10th certificate — even a single character difference can create a flag.

Category claimed without valid certificate — applied under OBC reservation without uploading a valid OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate.

Wrong trade selected — applied for Electrician with a Fitter ITI.

None of these generate a notification to you. You simply do not appear on the merit list and never know why. Go through your application carefully once filled, verify every field against your actual documents, and submit only when everything matches.

The Stipend — Realistic Expectations

Railway apprentices receive a monthly stipend under the Apprentices Act, 1961. The exact stipend amounts for SECR 2026 are specified in the official notification. Typical railway apprenticeship stipends run approximately ₹7,000 to ₹9,000 per month for Class 10 + ITI candidates, though this varies by category and railway zone.

This is not a salary. It is training compensation. Raipur’s cost of living — if you need to relocate — should be factored into your decision. PG accommodation in Raipur areas near railway facilities typically runs ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per month for basic shared accommodation. Food and transport add another ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per month.

The stipend covers basic expenses for local candidates. For candidates relocating from other states or districts, the financial planning requires more careful assessment. Many candidates choose SECR apprenticeship as a financial investment — spending from savings for one year to gain a certificate and experience that pays back over the rest of their career.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Go to apprenticeshipindia.gov.in — not the SECR website directly. All applications go through this central portal.

Log in with your existing credentials or register new. Ensure your profile is 100 percent complete before proceeding. Go to Apply Against Advertisement. Search for SECR Apprentice Recruitment 2026 using keywords “SECR” or “South East Central Railway.”

Click on the recruitment. Read the official notification PDF — all of it, not just the summary. Verify your trade is listed among the eligible trades. Click Apply.

Confirm your trade selection — it must match your ITI certificate exactly. Enter your Class 10 and ITI percentage accurately. Upload your photograph, signature, and certificates within the specified size limits. Review every field before submitting. Click Submit. Download and print the confirmation page.

Documents to Keep Ready

Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate. ITI marksheet for all semesters and ITI passing certificate — NCVT/SCVT recognized. Aadhaar card. Category certificate for SC/ST/OBC candidates issued by competent authority. Domicile certificate if required. Recent passport-size photograph with white background. Signature on white paper with black ink. NAPS registration proof. Bank account passbook showing account number and IFSC for stipend transfer.

One last thing before you close this page.

The June 4 deadline is 30 days away. Your NAPS profile either exists and is complete, or it does not. If it does not, creating and completing it takes 20 to 30 minutes — do it today, not next week.

The application itself takes less than an hour once the profile is ready. The railway career path this opens — through the apprenticeship certificate, through the experience on your resume, through the doors that Indian Railways experience opens in PSU and private sector technical roles — is worth significantly more than the hour you invest.

Apply before June 4. Good luck with your training.
