A Career That Few Engineering Jobs Can Match

Most engineering graduates in India spend months preparing for GATE, CAT, or campus placements. They compete for IT jobs, core engineering roles, or management trainee positions.

But there is one career path that many simply overlook – becoming a technical officer in the Indian Army.

The Indian Army has opened applications for the Technical Graduate Course (TGC-144) . This is not a regular job. This is an officer-level entry where you get:

Benefit What You Get
Stipend during training Rs. 56,400 per month
Commission Permanent commission as Lieutenant
Annual Salary (post-commission) Rs. 17-18 lakhs
Pension Lifetime monthly pension after retirement
Prestige Officer rank in the Indian Army

And here is the kicker – there is no written exam. Selection is through shortlisting based on your engineering marks, followed by a 5-day SSB interview.

But before you get excited, understand this: TGC is highly competitive. Only 30 engineering graduates will be selected from across India. This guide will help you understand exactly what it takes.

First, Check If You Are Eligible

The Indian Army does not compromise on eligibility. Miss any condition = application rejected.

No Written Exam – But SSB Interview is the Real Test

This is both good news and bad news.

Good News Bad News
No GK, Current Affairs, Quant, or Reasoning preparation 5-day psychological and personality assessment
No written exam to “cram” for Cannot be prepared overnight

Stage 1: Application Shortlisting (Merit Basis)

You fill the online form. Based on your engineering marks (percentage) , the Army shortlists candidates. Only shortlisted candidates are called for SSB.

Important CGPA Rule: Convert your CGPA to percentage exactly as per your university’s conversion formula. Example: If your university says CGPA × 10 = percentage, use that. Do not guess.

Stage 2: SSB Interview (5 Days)

The SSB interview is conducted at one of the Army’s selection centres:

  • Prayagraj (Allahabad)

  • Bhopal

  • Bangalore

  • Jalandhar

  • Other locations as notified

Day 1 – Screening Test

Test What It Involves
Intelligence Test Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT) Write story based on picture

If you pass Day 1 → You stay for remaining 4 days. If you fail → You are sent back.

Days 2 to 4 – Psychological and Group Tests

Test What You Do
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) Write stories based on 12 pictures
Word Association Test (WAT) 60 words, 60 responses (1 word = 1 response)
Situation Reaction Test (SRT) How you react in 60 difficult situations
Group Discussion (GD) Discuss topic with group
Group Planning Exercise (GPE) Military scenario planning
Progressive Group Tasks (PGT) Physical tasks with obstacles
Half Group Task (HGT) Smaller group problem-solving
Lecturette 3-minute speech on random topic

Day 5 – Personal Interview and Final Conference

Activity What Happens
Personal Interview One-on-one with senior SSB officer (30-45 minutes)
Final Conference All assessors discuss each candidate and finalize recommendations

Stage 3: Medical Examination

If you are recommended by the SSB, you undergo a thorough medical check-up.

Body System What Is Checked
Vision 6/6 (uncorrected) in both eyes
Hearing Normal range
Cardiovascular Blood pressure, heart health
Musculoskeletal Joints, spine, knees
General health No chronic illness, healthy BMI

Common rejection reasons:

  • Uncorrected vision below 6/6

  • Flat feet

  • Knee or back problems

  • High blood pressure

  • Any chronic illness (asthma, diabetes, epilepsy)

  • Underweight or overweight (BMI outside normal range)

Stage 4: Final Merit List

The final merit list is based only on your SSB marks – not on your academic marks.

Factor Weight in Final Selection
SSB Interview marks 100%
Academic marks Only for shortlisting (not final merit)

Higher SSB score = higher rank in merit list. The top 30 candidates get selected.

Physical Fitness – Start Preparing Today

If you think you can clear the SSB without physical fitness, think again. The Army expects every candidate to be in excellent physical condition.

Minimum Physical Standards for TGC Entry

Activity Required Standard
2.4 km run Complete within 10 minutes 30 seconds
Push-ups 40 (without breaking form)
Pull-ups (beam) 6 (full arm extension)
Sit-ups 30 (in one minute)
Squats Two sets of 20
Lunges Two sets of 15 (each leg)
Swimming Basic knowledge (50 meters)

Recommended Standards (To Be Competitive)

Activity Recommended Standard
2.4 km run Under 9 minutes 30 seconds
Push-ups 60+
Pull-ups 12+

Real talk: Physical weakness is the #1 reason candidates fail during group tasks at SSB. Start running every morning. Join a gym if needed. Practice swimming if you don’t know.

Final Advice – Is TGC Right for You?

The Technical Graduate Course is not for everyone. It is for engineering graduates who want a life of discipline, leadership, and service to the nation.

This is NOT for you if:

  • You want a 9-to-5 desk job with weekends off

  • You cannot handle physical exertion

  • You are not willing to relocate anywhere in India

  • You want to stay close to family always

Apply if you want:

  • A career that challenges you every day

  • The opportunity to lead soldiers

  • A salary and benefits that few private jobs can match

  • Lifetime pension and medical coverage

  • The pride of wearing an officer’s uniform

Apply for TGC-144 before 11 June 2026.

One last warning: Do not fall for any coaching center that promises “guaranteed selection.” No one can guarantee SSB selection. It depends entirely on your personality, leadership potential, and psychological fitness. Coaching can help you prepare, but selection is never guaranteed.
